SILICON OSCILLATORS – NEXT GENERATION CLOCKING

The PETERMANN-TECHNIK Silicon Oscillators can be used as direct drop-in replacements for quartz and MEMS oscillators without any redesign of the circuit board. Given their longevity, with a MTBF in excess of 500 million hours, and high shock and vibration resistance, the applications with silicon oscillators are more failure-resistant.

Low power draw
The Ultra Low Power 32.768-kHz XOs and TCXOs are available in housing dimensions of 1.5 mm x 0.8 mm and 2.0 mm x 1.6 mm, depending on design. They stand out for their extremely low power draw of less than 1 µA, and come at stabilities starting at ±5 ppm in the temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. Developers can reduce the power draw even further by reducing the amplitude of the output signal and adapting it perfectly to the application. Given their very low power draw, the ULPOs and ULPPOs available in the VDD range of 1.2 to 3.63 VDC are tailored to use in battery-powered applications: The range of applications includes, for example, wearables, GPS, smartphones, tablets, health and wellness monitors, sports video cameras, IoT, smart metering, smart housing, industrial (even for high ambient temperatures), consumer products, automotive and embedded computing. In particular, the Ultra Low Power 32.768 kHz Silicon Oscillators are also intended for applications that employ hibernation technology, such as Bluetooth low energy and GPS. The differential XOs, VCXOs and VCTCXOs in silicon oscillator technology are optionally available with LVCMOS, LVPECL, HCSL, LVDS or CML output signals, and have frequency stabilities of ±10 ppm in the temperature range of 0 °C to 70 °C, or ±15 ppm from -40 °C to +85 °C with extremely low jitter values of 0.3 ps in up to the 800 MHz frequency range. The aging of ±5 ppm after 10 years is less than that of a quartz-based TCXO. These oscillators are therefore suitable for applications such as networking and computing, server and storage applications, SONET, SATA, SAS, PCI-Express, routers, fully buffered DIMM and fibre-optic products. The VCXOs stand out for a very wide frequency range of 1.0 to 625 MHz with pull ranges of up to ±1600 ppm. Optionally, frequency stabilities of ±10 ppm to ±50 ppm over -40 to +85 °C can be selected, where the long-term aging is ±5 ppm after 10 years.

Oscillators with two available frequencies

In the frequency range of 2 to 110 MHz, the LPO-2 series can output two frequencies, selected at the frequency selection pin: the fundamental frequency F0 or a division thereof. Multiple use of oscillators with two different frequencies allows significant savings in terms of development, qualification, components, acquisition and infrastructure costs. Aging is TCXO level, at ±1 ppm after the first year. In the range of -20 to +70 °C, standard stability is ±20 ppm, or XXX  ppm in the range of -40 to +85 °C. The LPO-2 series has the best-in-industry jitter value at 0.8 ps jitter.

Spread Spectrum Oscillators
The Low Power High Performance Spread Spectrum Oscillators (LPSSO series) in the standard frequency range of 1 to 220 MHz stand out for centre-spread ranges of ±0.125 to ±2.0 percent and down-spread ranges of -0.25 to -4 percent. The VDD range is 1.8 to 3.63 VDC. LVCMOS, LVTTL, LVPECL, HCSL, LVDS and CML output signals are available, depending on the version. Spread spectrum oscillators are accordingly suitable for applications such as telecommunications, scanners, printers, copiers, interface controllers, graphics cards, PCIs, CPUs, set-top boxes and LCDs. The spread spectrum oscillator versions in which the spread can be disabled have a frequency stability of ±25 ppm (-40 to +85 °C) with a very low cycle-to-cycle jitter of 30 ps. The developer can enable a defined spread and thereby greatly reduce the costs for development, components, storage and acquisition. The same oscillator can be used in various customer applications with or without spread. The product range of silicon oscillators also includes, among others, VCXOs, VCTCXOs of up to 800 MHz and very low-priced stratum-3 oscillators. The “Silicon Oscillators” product range covers the frequency range of 1 Hz to 800 MHz, or the temperature range of -55 to +125 °C, depending on the component.
