The clocking specialists from PETERMANN-TECHNIK are demonstrating how to save a lot of money and set up applications to be secure with the right selection of automotive oscillators.
Current situation:
Due to the continually increasing amount of very complex electronics in modern vehicles and the ever higher packing density on miniaturised plates, the necessity for very small frequency-determining components is growing constantly. Moreover, in many applications, the change must be made from the AEC-Q200 compatible SMD quartz to an AEC-Q100 compatible SMD oscillator. Designers require either a higher temperature range, a more exact frequency tolerance or a smaller case for their applications in order to live up to the demand for plate minimisation. With a quartz without compensation, it is no longer possible to realise this. Furthermore, the resistance increases in small casings due to technological reasons so strongly that the safety factor of ≥10 required by vehicle manufacturers can no longer be adhered to because the oscillator level can no longer operate the higher quartz resistance in the required safety range. With an automotive oscillator, higher loads can be driven and more ICs can be cycled so that secure welding of the switch can be realised under any circumstances. In contrast to quartz, the oscillator does not require an external switching mechanism which takes up space meaning that smaller PCBs can be developed.
Extreme durability and a high degree of accuracy:
An MTBF of 1 billion hours. 50,000g shock resistance and 70g vibration stability paired with the Industry Best Vibration Sensitivity of 0.1ppb/G are not just wishful thinking, but are rather in accordance with the standard environmental conditions which the SMD oscillators of the LPO-AUT series (-40/+85 °C), HTLPO-AUT (40/+105 °C and -40/+125 °C) and WTLPO-AUT (-55/+125 °C) comply with thereby setting the best values on the market for automotive SMD oscillators. All automotive oscillators are available with frequency stabilities of ±20ppm over the corresponding required temperature range (also -55/+125 °C) with ageing of ±5 ppm 10 years after delivery. Because of this, the automotive oscillators are highly accurate and can be used in all automotive applications such as infotainment systems, collision warning systems, automotive Ethernet, vision systems, transmission controls, black boxes, sensors, etc.
Secure applications:
The demands of vehicle manufacturers are ever growing. The communications structure with external devices via Bluetooth in Infotainment systems needs to function more and more quickly. Automotive Ethernet or even the wiring systems must also be cycled more and more precisely in order to perform better. Transmission controls require high temperature ranges and extreme degrees of shock resistance and vibration stability which can no longer be fulfilled with quartz technology. But they can be fulfilled with the automotive oscillators in the PETERMANN-TECHNIK product range.
VDD range 2.25 – 3.63 VDC / Low Power:
The Low Power AEC-Q100 compatible automotive oscillators in the frequency range of 1 – 137 MHz available in the series named have highly innovative CMOS ICs which not only consume very little electrical power, but which can be operated in the supply voltage range of 2.25 – 3.63 VDC (3.3VDC or 3.0 VDC, or 2.8 VDC or 2.5VDC) with any possible supply voltage.
The time in which every accuracy and every supply voltage required its own elaborately specified, inspected, qualified, purchased and administered oscillator is over. The “-XX-” versions (2.25 – 3.63VDC) save a great deal of money throughout the entire process! Furthermore, the number of components can be reduced drastically, which results in lower infrastructure costs in purchasing and in inventory management (reduction in capital tie-up in the warehouse, etc.) Larger quantities of a component also mean lower prices.
With the power supply range of 2.25 – 3.63 VDC and the accuracy of ±20 ppm@-55/+125 °C, for example, the low cost / low power automotive oscillators can be used in any automotive application.
The power consumption of the automotive oscillators is typically 6.2mA@2.25 – 3.63 VDC at a frequency of 125 MHz, for example. A conventional quartz oscillator requires 40 mA. This means the automotive oscillators also fulfil the requirements for modern components, which require less and less electrical power. Samples in all traditional frequencies are available off the PETERMANN-TECHNIK warehouse shelf or special frequencies can be delivered within a few days.
SolftLevel function reduces EMV:
A normal LVCMOS square wave signal has sharp edges which can lead to EMV problems in automotive applications. The installed highly innovative CMOS ICs allow the extension of the rise time and fall time of the output signal by up to 45% so an EMV damping of the 11th harmonic of over -60 dB can be realised by extending the TR/TF times. An enormous value for such a simple adjustment to the trise and tfall time which does not cost the customer a thing, which is, rather a part of the standard service. Another very major advantage which speaks for the excellent performance of the automotive oscillators from PETERMANN-TECHNIK.
Versatile range of casings – choice of casing
All automotive oscillators are available in the standard casings with the dimensions 2.0×1.6 mm; 2.5×2.0 mm; 3.2×2.5 mm; 5.0×3.2 mm and 7.0×5.0mm. However, for new designs, the casing with the dimensions of 2.0×1.6 mm and 2.5×2.0 mm are used most often. However, the tendency leans toward 2.0×1.6 mm. Both casings are available for the long-term.
Obsolescence management:
It is a matter of course that PETERMANN-TECHNIK has optimised obsolescence management. With this in mind, the PETERMANN-TECHNIK specialists only recommend products to their customers which are available over at least 10 years.
Summary:
Through the use of the described automotive oscillator in the power supply range of 2.25 – 3.63VDC (“-XX-” versions) with the very narrow frequency tolerances of ±20 ppm, a great deal of money can be saved throughout the entire process as fewer products have to be inspected, procured and stored. Moreover, the EMV behaviour can be improved considerably with a simple adjustment to the output signal. PETERMANN-TECHNIK products are very small, affordable, extremely durable, available over the long term and can be used in all automotive applications. The PETERMANN-TECHNIK specialists provide detailed consultation which provide not only comprehensive technical services during the design-in processes and the large-scale production by application engineers, but who can also carry out circuit testing based on the vehicle manufacturer standards. From a single source for the welfare of the customer. PETERMANN-TECHNIK “your clocking expert”!
